Frequently asked questions

Game design FAQs

Are game designers in demand?

Yes, game designers are in high demand! The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that employment of video game designers will grow by 13 percent from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations. This is largely due to the increasing popularity of video games and the need for new and innovative content.

How long does it take to become a game designer?

How long it takes to become a game designer depends on several factors including your experience, and how much time you're willing to dedicate to learning, practicing and producing an exceptional game design portfolio that gets you hired.

If you have experience designing your own games, or have skills from another field (e.g. computer science, engineering) you may be able to reduce the time it takes to become a game designer. Starting from scratch without prior experience creating your own games will take longer.

CG Spectrum's game design courses are designed to help you become a game designer in 12 months. Upon graduation, you should be ready to apply for junior game, level or system design jobs. (Some of our most dedicated students have found work before graduating!)

What’s the difference between game design and game art?

Game design is about coming up with the concepts and ideas that make a game fun and enjoyable to play. This includes everything from the overall game concept and theme, to the individual mechanics and gameplay features.

Game art is about making those concepts and ideas come to life visually. This includes everything from creating the game’s characters and environment, to designing the user interface. Both game design and game art are essential to making a great game, but they are two very different disciplines.
